As everybody expected 25 4 LIFE/Toronto captured the 2nd Invitational/Independence 2 day tournament championship over the scrappy teenagers of FABA of Metro DC, Inc. 47-42. James Forrester garnered the "Most Valuable Player" Award. Congratulations TORONTO!!! You were the best!
On behalf of the Filipino American Basketball Association of Metropolitan DC, Inc. (FABA of Metro DC, Inc.) we would like to express our sincere thank you to all the participants of the tournament. Although only one will be standing at the end of the tournament, all of you were winners in our eyes and hopefully when we do this next year for the 3rd time we will see all of you again. Thank you once again and enjoy the rest of the summer. Till then and God Bless Us!!!
Who would have "thunk" it? That the kids from FABA of Metro DC, Inc ages 16-19 years old would upset the vaunted squad of 25 4 LIFE/Toronto in the semi-final in the winners bracket of the 2nd Invitational/Independence 2 day Tournament 44-40. It was the biggest upset that FABA of Metro DC, Inc. ever witnessed since 2001 its inception a "David and Goliath" sequel. This Toronto team has accomplished so much in almost a decade winning countless national/international tournaments in North America. Some of them played college and semi-pro league. You can check their own website and see it for yourself what they had done in the basketball world in North America 25forlifebasketball.com This cardiac kids of FABA hung in there toe-to-toe and never backed down till the end that in the beginning you would say, oh oh! no match and they'll be lucky to survive this game alive and breathing. But they proved everybody wrong............ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!! Excellent game planning that the youth executed, an in your face defense that never relax, help out defense, toughness inside, boxing them out of the paint, a patient offense that waited for the best available open shots that the defense would give them and were able to knock those shots down. Just fundamentals, baby!
Maryland almost upset 25 4 LIFE (Toronto) in the losers bracket that gave the quintet from Toronto to get another crack against Virginia in the final game of the championship. The Brooks Brothers from Maryland almost had those guys from Toronto in the ropes with a barrage of 3 pointers with some of it were coming from the parking lot. TREMENDOUS RANGE!!! The 2 thunderous dunk that James Forrester executed left the crowd in awe. He threw those babies down with ferocity aka Dominic Wilkins of Atlanta Hawks, tremendous upside, he is only 18 years old and growing definitely a star in the future. SCARY! if you would think the possibilities that lies ahead of this young man. This is not the only time you would hear his name sooner or later he will be a household name. Yesterday in one of the early games he put on a show with a 360 degree statue of liberty throwdown. WHAT AN ATHLETE!!! but he was not the only one who's throwing down those dunks, AJ Serjue (17 years old), Mike Semira who only stand at 5'10 got some sick hops and can throw down with the best and their little point guard, Ryan Dawinan who only stand at 5'6 but got some serious hop who can cup the ball and get up there way above the rim. Final score 67-63.
Washington DC once again fell behind double digit early in the game for the 3rd time in as many games in the 2nd Invitational/Independence 2 day tournament that they could not overcome. This time they were defeated by the old schooler from Gaithersburg in the tune of 58-39.
DC Metro ran out of gas in the waning moments of the game and out of the tournament to Maryland 54-48. DC Metro's Oyie Galang went down with a severe ankle injury with 4 minutes left in the game that left DC Metro's inside game non-existent and left a huge void in their post defense. It was a valiant effort nonetheless.
In an exhibition game between Washington DC and Gaithersburg in the Midget Division, Washington DC hung on with a 44-43 win.
Ronald Pavia drew 1st blood in their best of three games against Summa Realty Corporation 18-15 is the final score.
Deausen Enterprises cruised to victory over Pinoy Rockets aka AHAS 81-49.
Valera Associates came back to upset Trojans aka Aso after falling behind by as many as 21 points in the first half 36-35 in a hard fought game between the 2 combatants.
CJ Jaguars handled their business over Columbia Pike Shell 52-44.
Ashburn Consulting did not have any problem dismantling Orly Serrano d Handyman 79-51.

The newly appointed Commissioner is Mr. Rolly Santos.
The following Recipients of the donations from FABA of Metropolitan DC, Inc. are:
1. FABA donated $500 to St Jerome Emiliani and Sta Susana Parish Feeding and Nutrition Program c/o Mrs. Vangie Aldana at Ayala Alabang Muntinlupa City Philippines – the program was founded and launched in 2006, currently they are feeding around 251 undernourished children with ages ranging from 3 -12 years old. The supplemental feeding program costing “Twenty Pesos” per child per day which hopes to address the problem of malnutrition and help families with malnourished children throughout the provision of one hot meal a day for six months, nutrition education, parent effectiveness service and livelihood projects.
2. FABA donated $500 to Gawad Kalinga translation in English “ to give care” c/o Mr. Rolly Santos - the organization started in 1995 as a daring initiative by Couples for Christ to rehabilitate juvenile gang members and help out-of –school youth in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City, then the biggest squatters relocation area in the Philippines has now evolved. It is an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but in the world. Its vision for the Philippines is a slum-free, squatter-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry and as a result providing dignity and peace for every Filipino. Together with its partners, Gawad Kalinga is now in the process of transforming poverty stricken areas with the goal of building 700,000 homes in 7 years (2003-2010). To date Gawad Kalinga is in over 900 communities all over the Philippines and in other developing countries. Website: www.gawadkalinga.org
3. FABA donated $500 to Migrant Heritage Commission, Inc. c/o Atty. Arnedo Valera – it is a non-profit and service oriented organization; it is a response to recognize and protect the cultural identity and rights of Filipino Migrant in the US. It was founded on December 2005 to address the needs and issues confronting Filipino migrants including Filipino-Americans in the US. Website: www.migrantheritage.org
4. FABA donated $1,000 to Fil-Am Church c/o Pastor Romy Capuli and Tita Kaye Capuli – founded in November 1996 after the greatest challenge came to these couples that tried their faith. Their only son Ryan had open-heart surgery several days after he celebrated his second birthday. Then, on April 29, 1996, Ryan went home to be with God in Heaven. More than 400 people, Americans and Filipinos, attended the funeral service and came to share their grief with Romy and Kaye. These people had the opportunity to hear the preaching of the gospel at Ryan's funeral service. The death of Ryan could have easily discouraged the Capulis but they did not let devastating pain hinder them from fulfilling God's will in their lives...God in His sovereignty used that tragedy as an effective means to advance the preaching of the gospel and touch many people for Christ. They are currently raising funds to buy land in Fairfax county and build a multi-purpose community center called “Ryan Memorial Multi-Purpose Center” with basketball courts, community center, meeting room that will be available for use not only through the members of their church but for anyone in the Fil-Am community.
